CHAPTER 1 : The Kampung Life


This is a project from UCSI School of Architecture & Built Environment and it is done by students of Semester 3 (2013) Architectural History & Culture 3 who have been successfully lead by Miss Norji Binti Nasir & Miss Sukhjit Kaur Sidhu.

In Malaysia, the term kampung has been defined as a Malay hamlet or village. A kampong is described as a locality with 10,000 or fewer people. In order to identify the various factors and characteristics of Malaysian architecture and culture that influence the development of built environment and culture, we paid a site visit to Kampong Dusun Tua as it is one of  the oldest kampong in Malaysia.














Dusun Tua is the oldest Malay village, which is located in the sub-district of Hulu Langat, Selangor. The village has been growing in population ever since the establishment of IKBN which functions as an institute to train the youth. National Youth Vocational Institute IKBN Dusun Tua also get involve in the Independence Day celebration at Dataran Merdeka on August 31 every year.













Dusun Tua (in Bahasa Malaysia) means fruit orchards which have been growing fruits for quite some time. Dusun Tua supplies many delicious fruits, especially durian, rambutan and langsat. The main economic activity of this area is agriculture.  Therefore, most of the residents in the kampong plant fruits for a living. There are many wide empty lands and rivers that actually contribute the these plantation. Eventually, fruit plantation has become one of the speciality of Dusun Tua.



Malay, or mostly Minangkabau which are the original inhibitants of Dusun Tua, and included other ethnic Malay tribe, which are Java, Jambi, Mendailing and others. This can be proof by seen on their tone of voice of their local community spoken languages.






Dusun Tua is a well-known kampong mainly because of the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN). IKBN Dusun Tua is located 25km on the southeast of Kuala Lumpur with an area of 81 acres. The purpose of this institute is to train the youth with technical skills. There are 5 departments in the field of technology which are Automotive, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics.




IKBN Historical Timeline:

1941-japanese reign, the area was used as Base Hospital for Japanese soldiers.
1944-used as British soldiers training camp
1946-Malay soldiers military camp
1951-Police Rangers Training Camp for Royal Malaysian Police
1966-Taken over by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Malaysia and known as National Leading Youth Force
1969-name was changed to Dusun Tua Youth Training Centre
1991-name was changed to National Youth Skills Institute of Dusun Tua (officiated by Dato’ Musa Annuar)

Another well-known attraction of this kampong is the Sungai Congkak. It is a 9km drive from Dusun Tua. Sungai Congkak is known for its famous recreational forest. It was develop in the year of 1993 and received many awards regarding “Cintailah Sungai Kita” campaign.  It offers a good choice of recreation facilities and also comfortable rooms together with its wonderful chilling natural environment. Therefore, it often becomes a place where people usually plan to go for family vacation.



The name Dusun Tua literally let us know that the origin of the place has a close relation with fruits. That is why Dusun Tua has many orchards and farms that produce fruits mainly Durian, Rambutan and Langsat. Uluhati farm is one of the unique farms which are different from others in Hulu Langat. It all started 25 years ago beginning from a fruit farm, Uluhati offers many activities which started to attract visitors. These activities vary from fruits related to a range of farm animals and even recreational activities. With all the facilities provided, Uluhati has too become one of the choices of family vacation.

During the weekend, most of the local residents will go to the hot spring located at Batu 16 with their families to enjoy hot bath and picnic. As Dusun Tua produces a lots of fruits, therefore harvesting fruits has become one of their daily activities.
